Amie DB and I were really lucky finding our apartment.
We made some compromises (five floor walk up, half a mile (or more) to any subways, a flex, no laundry in building), but we were lucky. Our apartment is in our price range, didn't have a broker's fee, isn't a dump, and is in one of the safest neighborhoods in New York City.
Then something happened last Monday. We came home to a letter from our apartment's managing corporation. Due to a 2009 lawsuit that has finally been settled and the fact that we are living in a rent stabilized building (we had no clue about either), it turns out we've been overpaying rent. The letter contained a refund check for the extra rent we've paid and our rent decreased by more than 5%.
Talk about a New York City miracle!
I don't want to jinx it, but this city has been really kind to us so far.
