Last Saturday, Amie DB and I met up with Amies V and AL to attend the Belmont Stakes! My brother Dan and a bunch of his friends went last year and it sounded really fun, not to mention I watch it on TV every year, so I decided to make it my goal to attend this year before I'm likely no longer in NYC next June.

The four of us wore floral dresses and big hats and tried our hardest to be Northern Belles. Before going into the grandstand, we wandered around the picnic area where people were watching races on the screens scattered around, smoking cigars, drinking Summer Shandy's, and eating corn on the cob. People watching and preppiness at their finest (especially because really cool hats were involved)!

After spending some time in the picnic area we ventured inside to meet up with Dan and a few of his friends who were attending again this year. This is one of the funniest moments from the day. Dan was in middle of what he was telling us was a huuggeee bet. It turns out he bet $10 instead of $2 on the upcoming race. Huuggeee alright. Yup. Dan said he'd take our picture so took my phone to do so, but after we took a few pictures, I took the phone back and it turns out that all of the pictures were selfies of him!!! We all had such a good laugh. Then we made him take a few real pictures of us.

A few sibling pics got thrown in there too. In two different hats! Also we're kind of matching but didn't even plan it. Thankfully it wasn't awkward, because from past experiences where we've matched, it totally is. Like once in elementary school we wore the same shirt and windbreaker to school on the same day and everyone on our bus noticed. The more awkward part is probably that we were both wearing Old Navy 4th of July t-shirts in March or April. If you can't tell, we've come a long way with our fashion choices.

After meeting up with Dan, the amies and I hung around and watched the smaller races and the warmups. We also saw something along the lines of a paragliding demo, which came out of nowhere! And then after all the anticipation leading up to seeing the official Belmont Stakes, at 6:52 pm it was time for the real thing.

Besides hardly being able to see, the energy in the crowd was so intense and wonderful. It was like nothing I've ever experienced before. No one expected American Pharoah to win, but the excitement built up when he looked like he was going to win, and when actually did, the crowd seemed to lift together. It was incredible.
